A crazy rental scam occurred in Florida that caught the attention of the REALTOR(R) magazine. You have to read it to believe it. I can’t imagine being the people that were scammed, but then again as a renter you really don’t know who owns a building unless you’ve done some research or a person has shown you proof of ownership.
I thought about this briefly as I was having work done to my 4-plex in Kansas as I spoke with several contractors and neighbors. I kept telling people I owned the building and no one ever questioned me or asked for any kind of proof of ownership. This makes me more aware that as an owner I need to be sure to swap out locks each time a tenant moves out to make sure I don’t have a scam like this on my hands at some point, especially since I am a primarily non-resident owner.
